History[]

The Atlantic's core asset was its employees.

Navigating around any urban area is difficult, especially when said municipality is located under the sea, but the trains of the Atlantic Express enabled the citizens of Rapture to do just that. The Atlantic was one of the metropolis' original businesses and helped make life possible by enabling easy travel. Inevitably the vehicles of such a core city utility would require maintenance, and when they did, they'd be taken to the workshops of the Atlantic Express' service depot. Train Workshop #6B in particular was a hub of daily activity, whether it came from the engineers on the repair platform, the bookkeepers in the offices, the clerks in the mailroom, or the cooks in the cafeteria.

Unfortunately the Atlantic's glory days were numbered when personal Bathyspheres became all the rage, and the aging line was bought out so it could be decommissioned. Many employees were out of work, but worse came with the outbreak of the Rapture Civil War. The workshop itself was torn apart by war and left to rot in neglect.

Maintenance Runoff Pumping Station[]

Subject Delta lands heavily in the flooded Maintenance Runoff Pumping Station having narrowly survived an encounter with Sofia Lamb and her legion of Splicers. Over the radio Brigid Tenenbaum urges him on with some encouraging words. He swims through the filth and debris collecting loot from corpses and desks along the way until he spots an incongruous water-logged poster for the 1959 Rapture Masquerade Ball.

Emerging from the water, Delta shrugs off the remains of the storage room onto its last piece of dry square footage. A large venting fan spins slowly with an audio diary Mr. Tape Recorder appearing between the broken blades, resting against a toolbox. It's firmly out of reach, but perhaps something up ahead can resolve this problem of mind over matter.

Archival Offices[]

Delta must retrace his steps to the connecting Workshop 6B after being interrupted at the Gate Control at Workshop 6A. He makes his way through the workshop's back rooms first which contain Administrative Storage, Drafting, and a Jet-Postal Office.

Atlantic Express Administrative Storage[]

Shrines in unexpected places.

The storage room aptly holds bookshelves of thick sheaves of accounting and engineering documents, though many have fallen from their lofty perches over the years. A massive Rapture Family shrine with copies of Unity and Metamorphosis are scattered about. A disused Vita-Chamber sits forlornly in the corner across from crookedly stockpiled advertising posters.

Drafting[]

Much more occupied is the connecting Drafting room. Back in better years, designers, clerks, and other employees would improve designs of railcars, update records, and store information in this area with upright blueprint storage racks, flat file cabinets, and the prerequisite drafting tables. Tenenbaum warns Delta of the Security Camera watching over the space. Delta can hack the device to take out the pair of Splicers patrolling the central office and afterwards pick up the small treasure trove of valuables located around the workspace halls including a pair of Hack Darts, six Rivets, Canned Beans, thirty-two Dollars, a First Aid Kit, and fifty units of Drill Fuel.

Jet Postal Office[]

The door leading ahead to Workshop 6B is locked, so Delta detours through the local Jet-Postal office. Postal workers used to sort the incoming and outgoing mail that passed through this local branch, but the place has long since ceased to serve its function. There he finds a gift from Eleanor Lamb and has another vision. She instructs him to use the Telekinesis Plasmid to help him on his journey and to come and find her. Delta can use the busted pneumatic tube and the help of the Mail Pneumo Control switch to hone his new abilities before heading upstairs. Now would be a good time to backtrack a little to see if anything else can be picked up.

Workshop 6B[]

A fireside chat.

Delta reaches the top of the stairs with ominously red "She Knows the Way" graffiti and finds himself on an elevated office workspace with the audio diary Just a Fad resting on a drafting table. From there, he has a great view of the whole workshop still illuminated with flickering red neon. Train Workshop 6B went out of service long ago, but the place is hardly empty. He overhears a trio of Splicers gossiping about a particular incident ten years ago as they warm up around a trash fire below. The numerous Gas Cylinders and an EVE Hypo conveniently shield his bulk for a while. Delta becomes the subject of their focus when he turns his firepower on them. More Splicers run out to join the fight.

Once dealt with, the Archival Offices doorway can be jolted open with the bit of Electro Bolt. There are eight dollars and six rivets on a workbench nearby. Engine blocks and half-completed husks of railcars still decorate the space.

Railway Cafe[]

Order up.

Across the way, a trail of sixteen dollars leads to the cafeteria. A combination washroom, bathroom, locker area, and Health Station located outside the Railway Cafe helped the workers keep clean and organized at the start of the day, before each meal, and at the end of each shift.

An EVE Dispenser sits outside the flooded restroom which contains two toilets and a rather large hole peering into the gear mechanism of the next room. Outside the room, a dingy mattress festooned with colorful glass lanterns cradles an audio diary, What Happened to the People?.

Approaching the Deployment Bay Door causes it to slam shut. Through the window, a Splicer is seen jamming the gearing mechanism with a pipe. Tenenbaum comments on how Lamb controls the Splicers, Big Daddies, and Little Sisters, but Delta remains resilient. A quick jaunt to the hole in the bathroom wall quickly clears the jam, earning a verbal rebuke from Lamb herself.

  • The phonograph on the counter plays "I'm Making Believe" by Ella Fitzgerald and the Ink Spots. It can even be heard while the Splicers discuss Jack's whereabouts.
