The untitled next installment in the BioShock series was officially announced on December 9th, 2019 by 2K Games. The game is being developed by the newly founded Cloud Chamber studios and will be in "production for the next several years".[1]

Information[]

While the next BioShock had been rumored to be in development for several years (with the latest BioShock game being BioShock Infinite in 2013), it was officially announced on December 9th, 2019. The game is being developed by Cloud Chamber, led by Kelley Gilmore[1] and crew of 51-200 developers[3] consisting of BioShock-series veterans and newcomers to the franchise. Cloud Chamber has offices in both Novato, California, USA and Montreal, Quebec, Canada, with Ken Schachter being the Gilmore-appointed studio manager in the latter.[1][4]

The official announcement says that the game will be in development for several years, with no date given.[1] However, Senior Concept Artist Mack Sztaba marked the release date for the game as 2028 on his ArtStation resume.[5] The date was changed to 2023[6] a day after it was reported in the media,[7][8] before being removed completely.[9] Developer Matt Smith, currently working as the Principal Environment Artist for the game, previously worked as the Senior Environment Artist at Cloud Chamber from July 2017 to December 2019, which reveals that the game had been in development for over two years (at least) before the official announcement was made.[10]

In addition, Kelley Gilmore posted in 2018 that they were hiring a Senior Multiplayer Designer for an "unannounced, triple-A, larger-than-life game at 2K in Novato, CA." This reveals that the game will have a multiplayer mode.[11]

No official title has been given for the game, however, the placeholder logo for the game (seen above), found on Cloud Chamber's website, is named cc_logo_bio4.png, bio4 standing for BioShock 4.[12]

Ken Levine will not be affiliated with the development of the game.[4]

The game will be a first-person shooter.[2]

The description of the job listing for the Lead Environment Modeler for Cloud Chamber reads: "We are looking for a Lead Environment Modeler to work side by side with the directors and leads to carry our vision forward. We want you to set the example, leading efforts to help us breathe life into a new and fantastical world." This suggests that the game won't be taking place in Rapture or Columbia, but in a completely new location.[13][14]

How the game will be linked with BioShock, BioShock 2, and BioShock Infinite is currently unknown.
